Overview

The quality of stormwater runoff has become a focal point for federal, state, and local water quality agencies. With the EPA implementing NPDES permits for state, cities, and counties, monetary fines are being assessed on governments that do not comply with their permits. This has resulted in increasing enforcement by local agencies on maintaining stormwater systems.

Challenges

As with most systems, stormwater systems only function properly if maintained. If the maintenance does not occur, like removing debris from a catch basin, runoff will bypass the treatment phase and enter the stormwater system.

The EPA has developed baseline requirements for inspecting and maintaining these systems effectively. Following the minimum requirements will only protect your company if you do not exceed your NPDES permit or release contaminates into the stormwater system. Based on your business, additional steps may need to be taken.

Steps taken by a company are only recognized if documentation is available to regulatory agencies during an audit or inspection. While your company may have an established, written compliance program, it will not be recognized if no documentation is available to validate the steps are being completed.
